Publicly-Listed Securities

Donors who contribute publicly traded securities – stocks, bonds, mutual fund units and shares – can significantly reduce the amount of capital gains tax otherwise payable on the sale of securities. When sold publicly, securities are taxed on 50% of the realized gain. When transferred directly to a charity, only 25% of the gain is taxed.
